Welcome to Big Valley Joint Unified School District
Big Valley is home to both the elementary school as well as the Jr./Sr. High School and we pride ourselves on offering a well-rounded program with a great balance of academics and competitive athletics. Special programs such as Future Farmers of America, Future Homemakers of America, Big Valley Jogging Club, Student Leadership and CARDS, the Lassen County Office of Education’s after school program, add important enrichment activities for our students. Of course, our current academic focus is effective implementation of the Common Core standards. We are attending professional development in Explicit Direct Instruction as a supplement to Effective Standards Based Instruction and creating opportunities for Project Based Learning. As a faculty, we have engaged with the Continuous Improvement cycle and look forward to the very exciting components working as cornerstones in the future of education.
Simply put, Big Valley schools truly are in a remote location. We are at least an hour and a half to any major city and local folks make the drive in order to do “housekeeping” responsibilities like major grocery shopping, specialty shopping or going to a restaurant. Our beautiful valley is predominantly an agricultural community offset by Cal-Fire, a local medical clinic and dental clinic, a few local businesses and the school district. Declining enrollment and declining resources have been challenging to us on many levels. Just the same, Big Valley has a dedicated faculty and staff as well as a dynamic group of parents who provide never-ending support. Local businesses and the Big Valley Endowment also provide much needed opportunities in the way of internships, supplies and funds. We are embracing the fact that we will need to be very creative as we move ahead and look forward to the opportunity to do so. Of course, Big Valley Students are simply fantastic and always provide a high level of enthusiasm, humor and excitement.
